View DetailsAncient Indian texts describe the 3rd stage of life as Vanaprasthashram, literally meaning going into the forest. It implies that after one is done with ones worldly duties, one would take a step back, hand over the reins of the household to the younger generation.
India is witnessing a demographic transition and the elderly population is growing at a faster rate than the general population. India has therefore acquired the tag of “aging nation”. Life expectancy has increased in the last few decades but so have age related issues. In the meantime, our medical care system has remained by-and-large unchanged. Living with age related issues is still largely misunderstood - be they physical, mental or emotional. They’re even less talked about or even acknowledged in public.
As the concept of nuclear families has proliferated the elderly have to face the possibilities of living on their own. With many of us staying at some distance from our parents (sometimes even thousands of miles away), it is increasingly becoming challenging to look after our elders properly. Not to mention, our hectic and stressful lives rarely allow us to give them the time they require. On top of that, with old age come many mental health issues – large and small alike. Dementia, Alzheimer’s, depression, bipolar disorders are common among the elderly but mostly get ignored or aggravated due to lack of awareness.
All these factors make caring for the elderly a difficult and often frustrating experience – for both, the family members and the elderly themselves. It is high time we accepted the truth that there is absolutely nothing wrong in sending our elderly to live in retirement homes or old age homes. These facilities have evolved out of the need to address these same issues. The staff and facilities at such places are trained and equipped to address the specialized needs of the elderly – physical and mental. They provide a safe and peaceful place where the elderly can live with the necessary care and socialize with people of their own age while enjoying respect they deserve.
To care for our elders is of the highest duties and greatest responsibilities. To pay attention to the basic needs of those who came before us is the least we can do for those who’ve cared for us. By basic needs we mean Health, Happiness and Healing.
